End of Week 3
How well did you respond to the first project brief?
I think that I responded quite well to the first project brief, and followed the process that we learnt about in the 'creative process in a day'. I liked that we were able to turn the brief into literally anything we wanted if we were able to think outside of the box, so that the project would suit us individually. I was really happy with the outcome, and I felt like this was an amazing project to start the foundation with, as I was able to do mine on costume design, which is something that I am really passionate about. This meant that I had more confidence when completing the project as it was a subject that I love and am comfortable with, so I felt ok with presenting to the group and talking about my ideas.
How well did you use your time this week?
I think that I used my time quite well this week, and I was happy with the results that I had produced at the end of the week. I managed to use bus journeys as an unexpected way of making use of my time by taking some photos of the architecture in bournemouth on my bus journey, which I then used to influence some of the designs in my project.
What appropriate contextual references did you find?
As part of the research into the context of my costumes, I looked at the actual book of greta gatsby to find clues about the costume designs, which is what real costume designers do when they begin a project. I also made the link to art deco architecture and 1920s fashion, which I found really interesting to research.
Which new materials or practical approaches did you try/test ?
I made a mood board which I found really helpful which then lead on to initial ideas, then developed ideas, then 2 final ideas. I found this kind of formulaic way of working really useful as it meant that I didn't leave anything out or forget about any of the brief of requirements of the costume, as they were all part of the linear process. I used watercolours and pens to do the final designs, which is different to what I usually use which is either coloured pencils or copic marker pens.
Did you maintain on-going annotations that might be useful in future reviews?
I kept notes in my learning journal, as well as writing it up in my sketchbook and on my blog. One thing which I found really useful was fast paced mind maps, to quickly get all my ideas out on the page, so that I can remember everything that I think as it happens instead of getting caught up in it afterwards. I also think that mind maps are very easy to read and understand for me, so I am going to try and continue using them in the next few weeks of the course.
How did others respond to your work and ideas during the week? What can you learn from this discussion or feedback?
I was happy that my classmates were able to tell what my project was about without annotation cluttering the page, which we were told not to include. They responded well and I think that I was able to get my ideas across through my drawings, whilst also talking to back it up. I have only had to present ideas in this way a couple of times before, and I really enjoyed doing it, and hearing first hand from my group what they thought about my ideas. I really like being in a group of creative people who all have different opinions and can give ideas and thoughts about each others work. This is probably one of my favourite things about the foundation so far.
What do you need to do, find out about, or experiment with next week?
Next week is the media project, so I would like to find out how I feel about media in general, as I have never tried it before, so it will be completely new to me. I am excited to experiment and see whether or not I enjoy it and I also can't wait to learn some new techniques, especially on photoshop, as that is a programme which I like using but am not very experienced with, so I would like to learn more about how to use it.
If you had a tutorial this week, how might you use that to reflect on your progress?
