Project Launch: Design

Design is the project which I was the most excited about because that is the way that I think I work best. Day one was definitely a good start, and we worked with the idea of 'mapping', throughout the day and played with the idea that one project or design can inspire the next and that they are all connected along a line, taking inspiration from the previous idea to generate new thoughts and designs. The first thing that we had to do in groups of 3 was to design a structure which 'includes space' and is also in a specific space. We were given the space under the table, and we used this to create a circular structure, which by the end looked a bit like a planet I think! The space within our structure was the space inside the sphere in the centre.

The next thing that we had to create was an architectural type model for something which had to be 'habitable', inspired by the space in our previous striation. We took the negative shapes created by the straws in the sphere in the centre of our structure and used shapes like these to create our model, which is sort of like a very futuristic design for a house, or possible a concert hall of some description (it reminds me of the Sydney Opera house).

From here, we had to create a design for something that 'fits the body', which is my favourite out of all the mini briefs from the day, as this is something which I absolutely love doing. We created this dress which takes inspiration from the architectural model, and includes structures which are similar. I am really happy with how this came out, as we did it in a very short space of time, and I think the fact that we had less time meant that we had to be quicker at making decisions and sticking to them which was really fun and exciting.

I have loved Day 1 of the design project and I can't wait to get on with the next part.
